Baseball Buddy System: Miracle League Lets Kids be Kids

Springfield, Mass. - There’s nothing unusual about parents watching a group of kids playing baseball on a spring afternoon, except when the game is through the Miracle League of Western Massachusetts. These players with special needs may never have thought they’d be able to be part of a baseball team but are able play together on a special field at Springfield College.

The organization eliminates barriers so players of all abilities can participate. Each player is assigned a Buddy to help with game play. Buddies may provide very little aid, like simply ensuring the player isn’t hit by a line drive, or may be more involved by assisting their player with batting.

Right now, finding Buddies for the season is the organization’s biggest challenge. Board member Lauren Tabin said that since the pandemic volunteer numbers have dropped, and it’s the volunteers that help make the games happen. Being a volunteer has its own rewards, as many Buddies build lasting friendships with the players and have a front-row seat to bring their dreams alive.

“To be part of a team setting, to see kids come out of their shells, their eyes as big as baseballs and so enthusiastic about the game, it’s just a ton of fun,” said Tabin.

A Home Run for Kids

Through a partnership with Cal Ripken Senior Foundation and Springfield College, Miracle League of Western Massachusetts plays on a special rubberized field that is wheelchair friendly.

“We’ve eliminated any barrier for every child to be able to play baseball,” Tabin said.

“(Miracle League of Western Massachusetts has) been able to provide an environment where kids can be kids, everybody’s on the playing field, and everyone can contribute and patriciate at any pace that feels comfortable for them,” she said.

These youth between the ages of four and 19 have built independence by being able to play. It’s also something that many families never expected they would experience.

“A lot of these families never thought they would see their last name on the back of a jersey, and here they are,” Tabin said. “That’s huge.”

The Miracle League of Western Massachusetts has a fall and spring season annually. This year’s spring season will run from May 1 through June 26 with eight games and 61 players.

Batter Up

Miracle League of Western Massachusetts is using the Stand Out Truck to encourage people to volunteer. The campaign shows the perspective of being a volunteer and helping bring children’s dreams to reality.

Tabin used the truck during COVID-19 to celebrate special occasions. She’s hopeful that the new campaign will encourage volunteers to consider becoming a Buddy or to visit a game.

“I tell people all the time, just come to a game. You’re going to want to come back. Just come check it out,” she said.

By creating a safe environment for kids of all abilities, Tabin said they’re able to build a special opportunity for these youth and their families to experience something that other families may take for granted.

“We’re just breaking down the barriers for kids to be able to enjoy the game of baseball safely,” she said.

There are many ways to get volunteers for your organization, but digital billboard trucks are a great way to reach a large number of people in a short amount of time. By advertising your organization on a digital billboard truck, you can reach people who might not otherwise be aware of your work.

And, because digital billboard trucks are often located in high-traffic areas, you can be sure that your message will be seen by a wide variety of people.

In addition, digital billboard trucks offer the potential for a high return on investment, as they are relatively inexpensive to rent and can be used over and over again.

So if you're looking for a cost-effective way to reach a large audience, consider advertising on a digital billboard truck.
