Palmer, MA - “We believe that the more the community thrives, the more our business will thrive – so we have an outward focus. We’ve chosen to do the opposite of many businesses that turned inward to protect their profits in the face of a pandemic. And it’s working for us,” shared Jay Demore, Owner of Demore’s Automotive.

“The business has actually moved forward more this year than in previous years. We’ve added more customers and services, been able to make a few large purchases – including 4 new loaner cars so that customers aren’t without a vehicle while waiting for repairs to be completed. We’ve been able to grow in a time when other businesses are shrinking back.”

When asked how the business managed to both sustain and increase growth in these challenging times, Demore’s response was simple yet profound: “Our mindset was to stay positive and keep looking outward.”

Demore recognized what some are just beginning to realize: getting through this difficult time will require communities working together, whether it’s to stay safe, stay in business, or simply to stay hopeful. He shared that he belongs to a mastermind group for automotive garages, led by Aaron Stokes, Automotive Industry Entrepreneur, Founder of AutoFix & EuroFix, and Creator of the Shop Fix Academy. Through this group, Demore was able to participate in nightly mastermind calls where they shared ideas and strategies for a month, even as the COVID-19 crisis began to escalate. “The calls encouraged me that we’re in this together, and we’ll get it done,” Demore expressed.

One of the many innovative ideas birthed out of this uncomfortable moment for Demore’s Automotive was to collaborate with restaurants in the area. “We went around to local restaurants and purchased gift cards, and then handed them out to our customers,” Demore shared enthusiastically. This provided support for the restaurants and gave Demore’s Automotive the opportunity to engage with current and potential customers. “We shared the idea in the mastermind group, and it ended up going national. Garages all over the country started doing it,” Demore stated with a chuckle.

And the ideas kept rolling. During the Easter season, Demore’s Automotive sponsored meals from a local restaurant for over 200 people. By Thanksgiving, the number of meals served was over 300, including 80 senior citizen meals. In addition to sponsoring meals from area restaurants, Demore took his support for his community a step further, by paying for restaurants in Palmer, and all the way out to Worcester, MA, to receive ad time on the Stand Out Truck™. And as they gave generously to their community, business continued to roll in.

Demore’s Automotive has provided over 300 free oil changes to healthcare workers to date and have since expanded their target group to include pharmacy techs and EMT workers, who have been helping to lead the fight against the spread of COVID in our communities. They also donated sponsored meals to hospital workers as a thank you for their service and refilled the shelves of the local food share a number of times – most notably sending over a trailer load of food just in time for Thanksgiving.

And Demore isn’t done giving yet. They have purchased kids’ bikes, sleds, a Nintendo Switch, and electric Jeep to be decked out in the Demore’s Automotive logo, which will be raffled off in a FREE raffle for the holidays. All community members have to do is stop in and ask for a ticket - no purchase necessary. They are also hosting a “Stuff the Cruiser” event on Saturday, December 5th to benefit Santa's Elves of Palmer MA, where the aim is to fill up police cruisers with toys to be donated to families in Palmer. Everyone who brings a new toy to donate will receive a $10 gift certificate. “We realized that it was important to also get our community involved in the giving as well.”

Demore’s Automotive is the epitome of a business that is seeking to meet real needs right where people are and making these opportunities accessible to the community. Demore’s encouragement to other business owners: “Turning outward gives you more than you can ever gain by staying inward. Don’t give thinking about the return or the benefit, because when you do that, you’re focused on the wrong thing. Give, because it’s right thing to do.”

This is one more business thriving in a pandemic and proving that businesses that support their community will find that the community gives that love back.
