Dialysis Center of Western MA gets Lifesaving Boost

Chicopee, Mass. - Occasionally, a business will have an idea to boost their marketing efforts by renting a truck, attaching a message to the side, and driving it around town. That was the first plan to build awareness for the Dialysis Center of Western Massachusetts’ reopened location.

Then Melissa O’Brien, regional vice president of operations for American Renal Associates, discovered Stand Out Truck®. It was a similar idea without the hassle of renting a truck, creating an ad and finding someone to drive it.

“It’s a match made in heaven,” she said, adding that the Stand Out Truck® made life so much easier for the organization. Not only did she save time by not driving the truck around Chicopee, she was impressed with the quality of design and professional exterior.

“It is the most exciting thing ever,” O’Brien said. “It’s the whole kit and caboodle.”

Without Stand Out Truck®, O’Brien wasn’t sure what else they might do to build awareness beyond the newspaper which can be challenging to reach a wide number of patients.

The truck is letting people know about the recently reopened location so they know they have an option in Chicopee. Finding a convenient place for treatment is of utmost importance, beyond the owner of the facility.

“Patient choice is always an important piece,” said O’Brien.

At Your Convenience

Dialysis Center of Western Massachusetts, part of American Renal Associates, fills the void left by the recently closing of the Fresenius Dialysis Center. Chicopee’s newly reopened facility gives patients another choice for in-center hemodialysis treatment.

O’Brien noted that the dialysis process can take five hours, plus time to drive to and from the facility. Being able to find a place that is nearby can be critical to their health.

“A lot of our dialysis patients really do look for convenience. It’s a full-time job for them to receive these dialysis treatments,” she said.

The Dialysis Center of Western Massachusetts is located behind Wal-Mart, easily accessible but tucked away for privacy.

“Being in such a great location, we’re offering a service to the public that is going to prove to be truly beneficial. I’m really excited about that,” she said.

The Chicopee facility is led by Medical Director Dr. Barbara Greco, a nephrologist from Renal and Transplant Associates of New England.

American Renal Associates has five centers in the area including two new state-of-the art facilities in Holyoke and Springfield. The Chicopee location opens another area of geography to better serve the people who need it, according to O’Brien.

Putting People First

Until recently, Dialysis Center of Western Massachusetts was only offering in-home treatment, which continues with the addition of in-center hemodialysis treatment.

These options are important to ensure whoever needs treatment has access. Part of their focus is the importance of recognizing patients as individuals.

“We focus on people,” she said. “They’re people before they’re our patients.”

Letting people know that this treatment is available to retain a quality of life is critical. Using the Stand Out Truck® is a “lifesaver,” according to O’Brien, both literally in saving people’s lives and by allowing Dialysis Center of Western Massachusetts leaders to spend their limited time treating patients.

“Each person has their own individual story for braving dialysis day-by-day,” she said.

According to O’Brien, helping patients succeed, live a longer life and have a better quality of life, “that’s where the reward comes in.”

“We love to take care of our patients,” she said. “We take pride in what we do.”

Dialysis Center of Western Massachusetts is located at 601 Memorial Drive, Suite H in Chicopee.
