More Than a Food Festival: Why Springfield's Vegan Block Party Is for Everyone
Most people hear the words Vegan Block Party and immediately think, "That's probably not for me."
Justin Yarde hopes you'll think again.
On Saturday, July 26, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., a parking lot in Springfield will transform into something much bigger than a food festival. It will become a gathering place where families, food lovers, health advocates, and curious first timers can explore new flavors, meet local vendors from across New England, and discover that healthy eating doesn't have to be complicated or boring.
Whether you've been vegan for years, have never eaten a plant based meal, or simply love discovering new local events, you're invited.
"We're not trying to tell people what they have to eat," Yarde explained. "We want people to experience what's possible."
A Festival Built Around Curiosity
The Vegan Block Party isn't designed just for vegans.
Whether you’re a lifelong vegan, someone looking to eat a little healthier, or simply enjoy discovering unique local events, the Vegan Block Party is designed to make everyone feel welcome. It’s a place where longtime plant based eaters can reconnect with others in the community, while first time visitors can ask questions, try new foods, and explore a different way of thinking about nutrition without judgment.
It's designed for anyone who's ever wondered:
What does plant based food actually taste like?
Can healthy food really be satisfying?
How can families eat better without giving up the foods they love?
Instead of lectures, visitors will find burgers, hot dogs, meatballs, falafel, smoothies, lemonades, desserts, and creative plant based twists on familiar favorites from vendors throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, and beyond.
Many visitors leave surprised.
"They expect rabbit food," Yarde laughed. "Instead they discover flavors they never expected."
More Than Food
While the food may bring people in, the event offers far more than what's on the menu.
Families can enjoy a dedicated Kids Zone featuring:
Face painting
Interactive games
Live Double Dutch demonstrations and opportunities to learn
Family activities
Children's health education
Fresh fruit giveaways (while supplies last)
Families will also experience a baby wearing fashion demonstration led by certified doula Laconia Yarde, founder of Springfield Family Doulas. The presentation highlights baby wearing traditions from cultures around the world while teaching parents practical ways to carry infants safely during everyday life.
"It's about celebrating families," said Yarde. "We want parents and children to leave with something they didn't know before."
This year’s event is co organized with FACTS for Health and Wellness, a nonprofit dedicated to helping communities improve their health through movement, nutrition, and education. Their mission aligns closely with the event’s goal of giving families practical tools and resources they can use long after the day is over.
A Bigger Conversation
For Yarde, the event isn't simply about veganism.
It's about access.
Many Springfield neighborhoods are considered food deserts, areas where fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy grocery options can be difficult to find.
Organizations like Gardening the Community will be on site sharing resources about urban farming, gardening, and ways families can begin growing some of their own food, even in small spaces.
Organizers also hope the event becomes a place where experienced vegans can connect with one another while helping newcomers discover that eating more plant based meals doesn’t have to be intimidating. Sometimes the best education comes from conversations between people who simply share their own experiences.
"You don't need acres of land," Yarde said. "A couple raised beds can grow tomatoes, peppers, kale, strawberries, herbs, and so much more."
His hope is simple.
Leave inspired.
Leave educated.
Leave believing healthier choices are possible.
Why He Cares
Yarde's passion didn't begin in a classroom.
It began with his own health.
Despite working in fitness, he found himself battling unexplained health issues in his early twenties. After countless doctor visits and medications, he began studying nutrition, physiology, and the relationship between food and the body.
As he changed his own eating habits, many of his health issues improved.
That experience changed his life.
Today, through his business, Our Journey Wellness, he helps people improve their health through fitness, nutrition coaching, grocery store tours, meal preparation education, and accountability.
The Vegan Block Party is simply another extension of that mission.
"I've seen people lower their A1C, improve cholesterol, lose weight, and manage chronic conditions through lifestyle changes," he said. "If people don't know their options, they can't make different choices."
A Community Event
One of the most striking things about previous events has been the diversity of the crowd.
Families.
College students.
Retirees.
Fitness enthusiasts.
Foodies.
Vegans.
Meat eaters.
People from Springfield, Connecticut, Central Massachusetts, and even neighboring states all gather in one place over a shared curiosity about food, community, and wellness.
That's exactly how Yarde wants it.
“One of the most rewarding parts of the event is watching complete strangers connect over a meal. Families, friends, fitness enthusiasts, food lovers, longtime vegans, and curious first timers all come together in the same space. For one afternoon, food becomes something bigger than what’s on the plate. It becomes a way to build community.”
"This is for everybody," he said. "No matter where you're coming from, we want you to feel welcome."
Whether you leave with a new favorite meal, a healthier recipe, a gardening idea, or simply a new perspective, organizers hope every guest walks away feeling inspired. The goal isn’t to convince everyone to become vegan. It’s to encourage people to discover new possibilities, make informed choices, and enjoy a day centered around food, family, and community.
